Thotngamla Khodang (Angam) of Madras Christian College, India, Completes Practicum in Taiwan
Thotngamla Khodang (Angam), a graduate student in the Department of Social Work, Madras Christian College, Chennai, India recently completed an 8-week internship under the supervision of Dr. Huang Chao Hsing, Director of CJCU’s Centre for Social Empowerment (COSET). The internship allowed Angam to learn about social work issues in Taiwan, including community development and social services for women and persons with mental or physical challenges. While in Taiwan, Angam worked with several local private social service agencies, including the Garden of Hope Foundation and the Eden Foundation.
Dr. Huang, Assistant Professor in CJCU’s Department of Religion and Philosophy, founded COSET in April 2005 to promote social empowerment and facilitate the development of civil society in Taiwan. His vision is for COSET to play a key role in building a University-Government-Organization-Entrepreneur network in Taiwan that will serve the common good. At present, much of COSET’s work consists of conducting community leadership training programs that teach local officials how to assess community needs and to write grant proposals for government funding of development projects. According to Huang, such training is in high demand and has become COSET’s specialty.
